Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation in Poverty Reduction Programmes

The National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K) facilitated the “Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Poverty Reduction Programmes,” on 1-6 February 2015 in Yogyakarta. The workshop was attended by 60 representatives from related ministries and institutions research institutions.

TNP2K Executive Secretary Bambang Widianto said in the opening remarks that the workshop was not only important to disseminate knowledge on M&E methods but also as a tool to encourage more cooperation between M&E users, especially given its importance in poverty reduction programmes. This sentiment was echoed by Rahma Iryanti, Deputy Minister for State Planning/Head of BAPPENAS for Poverty, Employment and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises during his speech.

On the second day of the workshop, Vivi Yulaswati, Director of Protection and Public Welfare at BAPPENAS delivered material on M&E frameworks for poverty alleviation programmes. Meanwhile, Vivi Alatas, Lead Economist at the World Bank in Indonesia, gave a presentation on M&E best practices for poverty reduction programmes in Indonesia and globally.

Later, O. Mokhammad Royani, Director of Social Security, General Directorate of Protection and Social Security at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Bambang Indriyanto, Head of Policy Research, Research and Development Agency at the Ministry of Education and Culture, and Tini Martini, Assistant Deputy for Social Affairs Security, Deputy II for Coordination of Social Protection and Public Housing at the Coordinating Ministry of Human Development and Culture provided insight into M&E from the perspective of ministries and government agencies. It is expected that these views would form the basis for understanding the need for information, as well as providing input for M&E mechanisms at the village level.

Closing the workshop was Elan Satriawan, Head of TNP2K’s M&E Working Group, who spoke of the benefits of an integrated M&E system, the steps needed to build it, potential challenges faced, as well as efforts to overcome these challenges.
